China Porcelain - Antiques
Offered here is a rare antique Japanese ceramic vessel, crafted in cylindrical form and entirely hand-painted with elegant floral motifs in soft enamels, displays fine overglaze decoration in Meiji style palette, featuring green, red, blue and violet blooms with freehand brushwork and delicate craquelure throughout the glaze.
The vessel are signed on the side in red brushwork with the characters 錦光山 (Nishikozan) – referring to the prestigious Kyoto-based workshop active during the late Meiji period (circa 1880–1912).
The signature appears in a cursive brush script rather than the standard stamped mark often found on Satsuma ware. it says 錦之山 which could also be interpreted as "belonging to Kinkozan" or "in the Kinkozan style" - an artist or workshop that is connected to the Kinkozan workshop. It can be assumed that this is a later version (post 1912).
This piece was used as tea caddie or incense holder in Meiji-era households for both practical and decorative purposes.
Approx. 5.3 inches (13.5cm) tall, 2.75 inches (7cm) diameter, 320g.
